The National Cups (really only “Cup” in the US Amateur Cup as the Open and Over-30 have already been previously discontinued) are under fire from many angles. While the worry about losing the cups that many hold dear inspires this very piece, the fact that history of the competitions is being placed on the table as evidence to save them, is quite interesting. That is why U.S. National Cup Soccer is noting it.

Maryland  State Soccer Association, and President Tony Falcone is a particularly vocal congregation in support of the cups. Falcone’s letter has passages like this one:

” The teams that have lifted the Werner Fricker Open Cup over the last two decades do not associate themselves with DC United, Seattle Sounders or this year’s Lamar Hunt winner Sporting Kansas City. They do associate with such clubs as Bethlehem Steel, Maccabi Los Angeles and Fall River Marksmen. This is a competition with a long and prestigious tradition that our amateur teams enter to become part of that history.”

Maryland State Soccer Association
